Resilient by nature

Reimagining the docks serves as a generous gesture to all of Bergen, effectively returning the fjord to the community and healing the area's industrial past.

Embracing Dokken's blue-green development vision with ambitious goals, we leverage nature-based solutions to enhance climate resilience. The project envision co-existence with water, wind, and sun, by establishing cohesive public spaces deeply connected to nature's identity and ecological cycles.

The vision for Dokken as a regenerative city transcends carbon reductions and traditional building practices. It seeks to fundamentally reshape Bergen's relationship with the fjord, nature, and its historical roots, turning Dokken into an inclusive district that supports physical health, mental wellbeing, and regenerative lifestyles for individuals and the community. This vision aims to establish Dokken as a vibrant, measurable model of sustainability—not only for Bergen but for the entire Nordic region.

Reinterpreting Bergen DNA

Expanding Dokken involves thoughtfully reinterpreting Bergen's iconic mountainous coastal landscape, strategically utilizing large volumes of rock material from nearby tunnel and infrastructure projects. This approach creates direct waterfront access while unlocking the dual potential for recreation and climate adaptation. This regenerative principle integrates leisure spaces with practical climate resilience solutions, offering considerable benefits within unified, multifunctional environments.

Introducing urban clusters inspired by the 19th-century Norwegian "klyngetun" reflects contemporary shifts toward shared economies and balanced lifestyles whilst scaling biogenic and circular traditions. The emphasis on integrating living and working environments becomes central to Dokken's design, fostering deep connections within the local rhythm of community life. This concept of clustered living transcends conventional family structures, illustrating how multi-generational communities can thrive sustainably and regeneratively.

"Turning Dokken into a regenerative showcase will position Bergen at the forefront of European harbour renewal, embracing the future by honouring the city's past."

Connecting Dokken to Bergen's unique identity

The transformation of Dokken into a regenerative urban district provides an opportunity to explore a car-free neighborhood, integrating storm surge protection with thoughtful urban development as a strategic priority in city planning.

Drawing on Bergen's distinct character, we propose a harmonious transition between the existing city and the future vision for Dokken. Strategic, phased development and the rapid creation of inclusive public spaces draw inspiration from local culture and history. This approach ensures Dokken’s emerging identity aligns closely with Bergen’s existing strengths, responding to the political aim of achieving carbon neutrality.
