Building on our experience in Copenhagen’s Skt. Kjelds—developed after the 2011 “monster rain” event that caused nearly 1 billion euros in damage—we’re now bringing our holistic, resilient design expertise to Malmö’s waterfront redevelopment in Nyhamnen.
Malmö’s Climate District concept emphasizes three main goals:
1. Climate Adaptation: Safeguard the city against rising sea levels, severe storms, and heatwaves. This includes nature-based solutions such as rain gardens, vegetation for cooling, and robust infrastructure to manage urban flood risks.
2. Minimal Climate Impact: Promote efficient energy use, renewable energy production, and circular construction methods. Through climate budgeting and sustainable building materials, Malmö aims to reduce emissions while exploring local energy storage and reuse of resources.
3. Social Benefits: Engage residents and local stakeholders in the planning process, ensuring inclusive public spaces and mobility options. By encouraging shared transport, diverse housing, and multi-functional green areas, the city supports social equity and a climate-conscious lifestyle.
These strategies will be tested and refined in Nyhamnen, Rosengård, and Hyllie, positioning Malmö at the forefront of sustainable urban development. We at Third Nature are honored to guide this process, tailoring innovative design solutions that address climate adaptation, resource efficiency, and social well-being. Together, we look forward to shaping a greener, more resilient Malmö for current and future generations.
